M48 high-explosive shell & "lobster" crate.
The 75 mm high-explosive M48 shell served as the heavy-hitting backbone of American light artillery during World War II, engineered to deliver devastating blast and fragmentation effects against enemy fortifications, infantry, and unarmoured vehicles. Packed with roughly 1.5 pounds of TNT or Amatol, this olive-drab projectile was exceptionally versatile, compatible with a wide array of weapons, including the rugged M1A1 Pack Howitzer, the standard M1897 field gun, and the main guns of early M4 Sherman medium tanks. Whether deployed in the dense jungles of the Pacific or the hedgerows of Western Europe, the M48 shell provided front-line troops with rapid, reliable fire support capable of shattering entrenched positions.
To safely transport these vital rounds across volatile global supply chains, the U.S. military utilised the uniquely designed "Lobster" crate. This lightweight shipping container held a bundle of three M48 shells, each individually sealed inside a protective tarpaper or fibre tube to guard against moisture and rough handling. Bound together by an interlocking triangular wooden framework and secured with heavy steel banding, the skeletal structure strongly resembled a New England lobster trap. This clever geometric design not only minimised lumber use during wartime shortages but also allowed the heavy, 80-pound bundles to be stacked efficiently in transport trucks, safely dropped by parachute to airborne infantry, or lashed directly to the exterior stowage racks of advancing tanks.
