The subject: The Armoured Bulldozer in US service in WWII.
The Caterpillar D7 series medium bulldozer began service with the U.S. military during World War II. Its primary role is earthmoving, but it was used in a host of other roles, e.g., mine clearing with a special flail adapter kit. Some of these were used in Europe, Asia and back in the States after WWII finished for several years.
The dozer was the primary earth mover for the construction of survivability positions and antitank ditches. It had to be transported by trailer due to its poor mobility. During WWII, the D7 was one of the bulldozers collectively known as "Tractor, Heavy, M1". Equivalent tractors were produced during WWII by Allis-Chalmers Co. (Model HD10W, G-98) and International Harvester Co. (Model TD18, G-101). About one thousand Caterpillar D7s were also produced by American Car & Foundry under licence when WWII military orders exceeded Caterpillar's capacity.
The overhead steel bar that carried the control cables from the rear control unit to the bulldozer was called the "headache bar" by the servicemen that operated the tractors.  During operations where bulldozer-equipped tractors were pushing over coconut or other large trees in the Pacific, the "headache bar" offered the operator some protection when the tree fell back on the tractor.  Author's photo.
