History: the P-51D Mustang – King of the skies over Europe

The North American P-51D Mustang is a symbol of American air supremacy during World War II. The "D" version, with its drop-top cockpit and powerful Packard V-1650-7 Merlin engine, became the terror of the German Luftwaffe. With their enormous range, these machines could escort heavy bomber formations to the most distant targets in the heart of the Third Reich and bring them back safely. The Mustang was not just an escort fighter; it was an excellent machine for gaining air superiority, and it continued to prove its worth long after the war, especially in the Korean conflict.
