The Subject: Opel Blitz 3.6-6700A RN-Type
The Opel Blitz 3.6-6700A served as a cornerstone of German military logistics during World War II, entering production in mid-1940 to meet demanding frontline transport needs. Manufactured at Opel’s specialized Brandenburg facility, this 3-tonne tactical truck was engineered to endure harsh combat environments that easily destroyed standard commercial vehicles. It was powered by a reliable 3.6-litre, 6-cylinder inline petrol engine generating up to 75 horsepower, allowing it to reach top speeds of 80 km/h on paved roads. Because of its durable design, the chassis became the universal foundation for dozens of military variants, including troop transports, command posts, mobile workshops, and field ambulances.

There are three marking choices in this kit, and the photos here show them in real life.
The "RN-Type" designation translates to Radstand Normal (Normal Wheelbase) and identifies a specific factory configuration meant for heavy-duty structural applications. While the "A" denotes the Allrad (all-wheel-drive) layout, the "RN" suffix highlights the vehicle’s standard 3,450 mm chassis length paired with unique structural mounting points. Instead of rolling off the assembly line with a standard wooden cargo bed, the RN-Type chassis featured reinforced frame rails and brackets. This unique layout allowed external coachbuilders to directly bolt down specialized, heavy metal van bodies and mobile field offices without compromising the structural integrity of the truck.

The primary differences over the normal vehicle centered on superior off-road mechanics, an advanced drivetrain, and increased physical clearance. Unlike the normal 4x2 commercial version (known as the "S" type), the 6700A was equipped with a switchable all-wheel-drive system and a two-speed transfer case that distributed power to both axles. To accommodate the front drive axle, the truck featured a noticeably higher ride height and a modified engine cowling with straight-edged lower side panels to clear the front suspension. These critical modifications allowed the RN-Type to successfully conquer deep mud, sand, and snow, resolving the crippling traction issues that plagued normal rear-wheel-drive utility trucks on the Eastern Front.
