The PLAAF's J-36 represents a radical departure from conventional fighter aesthetics, opting for an avant-garde, tailless delta design heavily optimized for broadband stealth. First observed in late 2024, the heavy fighter utilizes a continuous chine line and a highly blended wing-body fuselage to drastically minimize its radar cross-section from all angles. Intriguingly, prototypes have showcased a unique trijet engine configuration alongside an unconventional side-by-side cockpit arrangement. This design choice points toward its role as a long-range, high-endurance "airborne cruiser" or an airborne command node, where a two-person crew can split the immense workload of piloting and managing network-centric operations.

Beneath its stealthy skin, the J-36 is built to project extreme power across vast operational ranges, particularly within the Indo-Pacific theatre. The aircraft features a massive main internal weapons bay stretching roughly 7.6 metres, engineered to house China's largest next-generation air-to-air and hypersonic strike munitions without compromising its low-observable profile. Combined with two smaller lateral bays, this heavy payload capability positions the J-36 as a primary threat to high-value aerial targets, like tankers and AWACS aircraft, as well as heavily defended naval groups. As flight testing rapidly accelerates at remote facilities like Lop Nur, the J-36 stands as the crown jewel of China’s push into sixth-generation air superiority.
