Galaxy Model, in collaboration with Model Mate, has officially sent shockwaves through the braille-scale community with the announcement of their upcoming 1/144 USAF F-16C Fighting Falcon (Kit No. FK14001). Commemorating the 20th FW 50th Anniversary & 35th FW Wild Weasel Demo teams, this entirely 3D-printed kit promises to redefine what modellers expect from the diminutive 1/144 scale.
The Subject:
The General Dynamics F-16C Fighting Falcon represents the pinnacle of single-engine multirole fighter design. Originally conceived as a lightweight, daytime air-superiority fighter, the "Viper" evolved into an all-weather strike platform capable of executing the military's most hazardous assignments. Chief among these is the "Wild Weasel" Suppression of Enemy Air Defences (SEAD) mission, where specialized F-16C units deliberately provoke enemy radar installations to paint them, subsequently destroying the threats with radar-homing missiles.
This specific release celebrates two visually stunning chapters of modern USAF history. The 20th Fighter Wing, based out of Shaw Air Force Base, famously adorned a flagship Viper in an eye-catching 50th Anniversary scheme to honour decades of tactical heritage. Meanwhile, Misawa Air Base’s 35th Fighter Wing boasts the legendary Wild Weasel Demo Team, showcasing the blistering agility and raw power of the F-16 over crowds worldwide, complete with their iconic predatory mascot emblazoned proudly across the tail fin.
The Sprue-less Sprues & Render Details
Galaxy Model has pulled out all the stops for this release, leveraging advanced 3D-printing tech to pack an unprecedented amount of sharp detail into microscopic spaces with what looks like a simple-to-build & rewarding overall modelling experience.
Forget traditional plastic sprues; this kit is entirely layout-printed with complex support lattices. The components break down cleanly into high-resolution sub-assemblies. You can spot the main fuselage halves (A), distinct wing segments (M, N), intricately moulded external fuel tanks (R), an array of precision ordnance (S, T, U), and a heavily detailed cockpit tub (D). A custom paint mask and a comprehensive decal sheet tie the whole package together. Easy construction and a small but detailed group of parts (with sensible support removal points) give the kit a promising look.
Moving closer to the CAD renders, the rear fuselage features incredibly fine, recessed panel lines and delicate rivet lines that usually vanish in this scale. The characteristic F-16C vertical tail slice is razor-sharp, transitioning smoothly down into a multi-part exhaust nozzle shroud.
The cockpit area is an absolute showstopper. It features a multi-part ejection seat, authentic side consoles, a tiny head-up display (HUD), and even a miniature pilot figure wearing modern flight gear, complete with life vest detailing and an oxygen mask hookup.
Flipping the CAD model upside down reveals the true capability of 3D printing over traditional slide-moulding. The main wheel bays are fully boxed in with deeply structural plumbing, hydraulic lines, and structural ribbing. The landing gear legs and actuation retractors look beautifully scale-accurate rather than chunkily simplified.
Galaxy Model previews the multimedia contents laid over the airframe layout. The decal sheet is tightly packed with perfect registration for the complex tail-art graphics, stencils, and formation lights. A turned metal pitot tube ensures you won't suffer from brittle plastic snaps at the nose tip.
The clear parts:A major hurdle for 3D-printed kits has always been transparency. Galaxy Model appears to have cleared it with a specialized clear-resin printed canopy frame. The bubble canopy arrives crystal clear, requiring none of the intense polishing usually associated with garage-industry resin.
The Marking Options:
The side profiles give us a great look at the final livery selections. On top is the dark-tailed Misawa 35th FW Wild Weasel scheme, featuring the striking white graphics slithering down the tail. Below it sits the colourful Shaw 20th FW 50th Anniversary scheme, showcasing its vibrant, multi-hued tail flash.
The test shot -
In the shot below we see the physical test build assembled under a clean primer layer, which proves that this isn't just vapourware. The stance is classic Viper, the fit looks exceptionally tight around the nose section, and the thinness of the wing trailing edges easily rivals high-end 1/48 plastic kits.
To us the highlights of this kit look to be the smart parts design that makes for an easy assembly and the sensible support removal points, the marking choice which is very nice & the detail on hand which really does stand out, even at this scale (but not too much). It looks great for Viper and Weasel fans...
