The Subject: The M109A7 Paladin
The M109A7 Paladin represents the most advanced evolution of the United States Army’s premier tracked artillery platform. Manufactured by BAE Systems, this lethal combat machine weighs approximately 35.4 tonnes and features a massive 155 mm M284 cannon integrated with a fully automated electronic rammer. Unlike its predecessor, the M109A6, the M109A7 relies heavily on a newly designed chassis, suspension, engine, and transmission adapted from the M2 Bradley Fighting Vehicle. This clever automotive crossover significantly streamlines parts inventory, cuts production costs, and reduces the overall logistical footprint for maintenance personnel on the front lines. Driving its formidable physical presence is a 675-horsepower engine backed by a powerful 600-volt onboard electrical architecture, replacing ancient, maintenance-heavy hydraulic components with clean, rapid-acting electric drives.

An "inconspictuous" M109A7 155mm self-propelled howitzer in maybe the wrong camouflage for this exercise...
In active field service, the primary operational directive of the M109A7 Paladin is providing heavy, responsive, indirect fire support for Armoured Brigade Combat Teams (ABCTs). Digitally connected to advanced battlefield networks, the vehicle receives immediate targeting telemetry directly from forward observers, radar arrays, and reconnaissance drones. Upon halting, its onboard fire control computers process the data rapidly, allowing the crew to transition from travel mode to laying precise fire on a target in under 30 seconds. The system is capable of hurling NATO-standard projectiles across a range of 22 to 30 kilometres, expanding up to 50 kilometres when deploying GPS-guided precision munitions like the Excalibur. Operating in tandem with the M992A3 Ammunition Carrier, the Paladin ensures sustained, high-intensity bombardment capabilities during ongoing combat manoeuvres.

...ahh, that's a little better :-)
Survivability and rapid repositioning dictate the tactical deployment of this modernised howitzer. Utilising its highly efficient "shoot and scoot" methodology, the M109A7 can unleash up to four rounds per minute and swiftly displace before incoming enemy counter-battery fire can zero in on its position. The four-soldier crew benefits from enhanced applied armour packages designed to shrug off IED blasts and heavy shrapnel, supplemented by an Automatic Fire Extinguishing System (AFES) and a Common Remotely Operated Weapon Station (CROWS) for localised defence. To ensure long-term readiness, built-in computer diagnostics continuously monitor the digitised electrical systems, catching structural or mechanical faults early so the "King of Battle" spends less time in the motor pool and more time dominating the modern battlespace.

A M109A7 Paladin self-propelled howitzer, assigned to the 1st Battalion, 82nd Field Artillery Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division Artillery, fires a round while conducting a live-fire exercise Aug. 25 at Fort Hood.
