Italeri has six models on their release schedule for April. As per usual with this prolific Italian model company, these are varied in scale and in subject, colours and difficulties. See if there is anything in this half dozen in our preview...

Audi Quattro Rally

In 1980, during the Geneva Motor Show, its new two-door Audi Quattro coupe was presented by the German automaker of Ingolstadt. Produced for all the '80s the Italian name highlights its main characteristic: four-wheel drive. The four-wheel drive on a vehicle that had the goal of generating large numbers on the market was, in fact, an important innovation for the time.

In fact, the "Quattro" guaranteed good performance combined with excellent road holding on all types of surfaces. The front longitudinal engine was, in fact, able to deliver an appreciable performance. A competition version was also made which debuted in the 1981 World Rally Championship, achieving good results.

Sm.81 Bat

The Savoia Marchetti SM 81 entered service in the bombing departments of the Regia Aeronautica around the mid-30s. He worked in the Ethiopian campaign, in the Spanish Civil War, and during the Second World War. Low-wing trimotor was powered by 3 650 hp Alfa Romeo 125 RC 35 engines or, later, the more powerful 700 hp Piaggio P. X RC.35 that carried it at a maximum speed of 340 km /hr. Armed with 6 7.7-mm Breda-Safat machine guns he had an offensive load of 2,000 kg of bombs.

At the time of its entry into service was one of the most modern bombers in the world but, at the beginning of the Second World War, now exceeded, was mainly used in night missions. Precisely for this reason, the aircraft took the nickname "bat".


M12 Gun Motor Carriage

The Gun Motor Carriage M12 was developed on the hull of the M3 Lee / Grant tank on which was installed a piece of artillery of French origin, the 155 mm GPF and used during the Second World War by the US Army. The M12 artillery self-propelled had an "open sky" structure that housed the main armament, ammunition and servants.

Only the place of the driver and the radio aerator was protected. In order to absorb the effects of the recoil during the use of the artillery piece, the M-12 was equipped with a rear vomer that was lowered and driven into the ground.



Mercedes Benz 2238 6x4

The proud point of the Mercedes Benz was for a long time the heavy truck 2238 6 x 4, used for long-distance traffic. The truck was propelled by both rear axles and had an engine that developed up to 375 horsepower.

It was the heaviest truck in the Mercedes for long distance transport and also imposed new rules in the traffic of long journeys. The characteristics of the OM 422 engine afforded great economy to the vehicle. The speed changes were reduced to a minimum and allowed a very regular driving.


RSO / 03 with PAK 40

To cope with the uncomfortable conditions of the roads on the eastern front, the Germans built caterpillar tractors to tow all types of vehicles and to transport various loads, including ammunition and food. The official name of this type of vehicle was "Raupenschlepper-Ost" (Crawler tractor-East). The RSO was built mainly by the Austrian company Steyr.

It had a commercial-style cockpit made of sheet iron. The loading box was made of wood. Later versions, such as the RSO / 3, built by Klockner-Humbolt-Deutz AG, had a simplified cab with a tarpaulin coating. This tractor proved to be an ideal vehicle for mud and slime on the Russian front.


B-58 Hustler

The B-58 was able to reach a supersonic speed at full load and was intended to carry only nuclear weapons for a prompt response to Soviet aggression, which in the years of the "Cold War" was considered a persistent possibility.
