The subject: The Fordson Model N 1935 tractor
The 1935 Fordson Model N was a significant evolution in Ford’s line of agricultural tractors, building upon the legacy of the earlier Model F. Introduced in 1929 and produced through 1945, the Model N was designed to be more robust and efficient, with a 4.4L four-cylinder engine that delivered approximately 27 horsepower. This increase in power was achieved through a larger cylinder bore, making it more capable of handling demanding farm tasks. The tractor was manufactured in Dagenham, England, after production shifted from Cork, Ireland, in 1933 due to economic pressures and logistical challenges.
A restored Fordson N in modern times is still working. These are a popular subject for restorers due to their rugged nature.
By 1935, the Model N featured several key improvements that enhanced its performance and usability. A power take-off (PTO) system became available as an option, allowing the tractor to power auxiliary equipment. The air cleaner assembly was upgraded to better handle dusty conditions, addressing a common issue with earlier models. Additionally, the mudguards were restyled for improved durability and appearance. These refinements reflected Ford’s commitment to adapting the tractor to real-world agricultural needs.
Pilots of No. 601 Squadron RAF use a Fordson N to negotiate muddy conditions on their airfield at Exeter, November 1940.
The 1935 model also marked the introduction of the Land Utility variant, which incorporated a revised cylinder head designed by engineer Harry Ricardo. This version included an oil bath air cleaner and was fitted with 20-inch rims and pneumatic tyres, which improved traction and ride comfort. These features made the Model N more versatile and better suited to a variety of terrains and farming applications. The use of pneumatic tyres, in particular, represented a shift away from the traditional steel wheels, signalling a modernisation of farm machinery.
Overall, the 1935 Fordson Model N stood out as a durable, practical, and forward-thinking tractor that helped shape the mechanisation of agriculture in the mid-20th century. Its blend of mechanical reliability, thoughtful upgrades, and adaptability ensured its popularity among farmers in the UK and abroad. With over 200,000 units produced at the Dagenham plant between 1933 and 1945, the Model N left a lasting legacy in the history of agricultural engineering.
In 1942, 24-year-old Anne Keys reverses a Fordson N tractor out of a shed during her training at the Northampton Institute of Agriculture.
This new boxing from MiniArt:
This model represents the tractor that ploughed the fields all week and when war came, towed trailers, generators, and bomb trolleys for the Allies. This kit recreates the tractor’s heavy pressed-steel build, exposed four-cylinder engine, and signature wheels, making it a perfect slice of civilian or behind-the-lines life for any 1/35th scale farm or even military use/WWII diorama.
Included in this kit:
• Photo-Etched Parts included for extra realism
• Clear parts for head- and work-lamp lenses
• Decal sheet with three vehicle markings included
Attachments for the plough and other machinery are included.
Two exhaust options are included for this tractor.Photo-etch is included with some options for the modeller available through its use.
