HMHS Britannic
by Trumpeter
Kit No #03721
1/200th scale
The HMHS Britannic—originally intended to be the RMS Britannic—was the third and final ship of the White Star Line’s Olympic-class trio, alongside the Titanic and Olympic. Designed to be the safest and most luxurious of the three, Britannic incorporated major safety upgrades following the Titanic disaster, including a double hull and elevated watertight bulkheads. Launched in February 1914, her entry into commercial service was delayed by the outbreak of World War I. Instead of ferrying passengers across the Atlantic, she was requisitioned by the British Admiralty in November 1915 and converted into a hospital ship, painted white with green stripes and red crosses, and outfitted with operating rooms and over 3,000 beds.

Tragically, Britannic never completed a commercial voyage. On November 21, 1916, while en route to pick up wounded soldiers from the Dardanelles campaign, she struck a German naval mine near the Greek island of Kea. Despite her reinforced design, the ship sank in just 55 minutes—faster than the Titanic—due to open portholes and malfunctioning watertight doors. Of the 1,065 people aboard, 30 lost their lives, many in lifeboats pulled into the still-turning propellers. Among the survivors was Violet Jessop, who had also lived through the Titanic and Olympic incidents. Today, Britannic rests on the seabed as the largest intact passenger ship wreck in the world—a haunting monument to a vessel that never fulfilled its peacetime promise.

UH-1B Huey - Gunship
by Trumpeter
Kit No. 05112
1/35th scale
The UH-1B gunship, a variant of the iconic Bell UH-1 "Huey" helicopter, was one of the first true helicopter gunships to see widespread operational use. Originally designed as a utility and medevac aircraft, the UH-1B was adapted during the Vietnam War to meet the growing need for aerial firepower in dense jungle combat. Engineers outfitted it with wing stubs that could carry quad .30 calibre machine guns, 2.75-inch rocket pods, and even automatic grenade launchers mounted in chin turrets. These modifications transformed the Huey into a formidable close air support platform, capable of escorting troop transports and suppressing enemy positions with precision and speed.

Nicknamed "Cobras" when armed with guns and "Frogs" or "Hogs" when equipped with rockets, UH-1B gunships played a crucial role in the "air cavalry" strategy of the U.S. Army. They often operated in hunter-killer teams, pairing with observation helicopters like the OH-6 or OH-58 to locate and eliminate enemy forces. Despite their relatively light armour, UH-1Bs proved surprisingly resilient and effective, influencing the rapid development of dedicated attack helicopters like the AH-1 Cobra. Their legacy endures not only in military aviation history but also in the cultural memory of the Vietnam War, where the sound of their rotors became synonymous with both rescue and firepower.
