The M1025 and M1026 HMMWVs—commonly referred to as Humvees—are tactical armament carriers developed as part of the U.S. military’s High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV) programme. Designed for battlefield versatility, these vehicles are built to transport troops and heavy weapons across rugged terrain while offering a degree of protection and mobility that far surpassed their predecessors like the M151 MUTT. Manufactured by AM General, with armouring typically provided by O'Gara-Hess & Eisenhardt, the M1025 and M1026 became mainstays in U.S. and allied operations from the late Cold War through the Global War on Terror. Both variants are powered by robust 6.2L or 6.5L V8 diesel engines, depending on the production batch, and feature full-time four-wheel drive with independent suspension. This configuration allows them to climb 60% grades, traverse 40% side slopes, and ford water up to 76 cm deep—extendable to 152 cm with a fording kit. Their operational range is approximately 563 kilometres (350 miles), and they can reach speeds of up to 105 km/h (65 mph), making them suitable for rapid deployment and manoeuvring in combat zones. They are also air-transportable via C-130 aircraft or sling-loadable by helicopters, enhancing their strategic mobility.U.S. Marines conduct mounted patrols on Camp Red Devil at Fort Carson, CO - firing .50 Caliber Machine Guns from High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles (HMMWVs)
The primary distinction between the M1025 and M1026 lies in the presence of a winch. The M1026 is equipped with a front-mounted winch for vehicle recovery and obstacle clearance, while the M1025 lacks this feature. Both models support roof-mounted weapon systems via a rotating ring turret, capable of mounting a variety of armaments, including the M2 .50 calibre machine gun, the M240 7.62 mm machine gun, the MK19 40 mm automatic grenade launcher, or even TOW anti-tank missile systems. These configurations allow the vehicles to serve as mobile fire support platforms, convoy escorts, or base defence assets. Over time, both variants received upgrades under the A1 and A2 designations, which included improvements to engine performance, seating ergonomics, steering systems, and electrical components. Despite their relatively light armour compared to MRAPs or IFVs, the M1025/6 series remained in service due to their reliability, adaptability, and ease of maintenance. They’ve been deployed in diverse environments—from desert warfare in the Middle East to peacekeeping missions in the Balkans—and continue to serve in various roles within reserve and allied forces.T-MODEL has shown new CADs of the features of their newest kit – the 1/72 scale M1025/6 Hummer utility vehicle.
