The subject: Land Utility Tractor Standard N "Green" Mod. 1940
The Land Utility Tractor Standard N "Green" Mod. 1940 was conceived as a rugged, multi‑role workhorse for wartime rear‑area tasks, bridging the gap between agricultural tractors and light military prime movers. Built around a simple, low‑stress chassis and a proven inline petrol engine, the Standard N emphasised ease of maintenance, parts commonality, and compatibility with civilian fuel supplies. Suspension and transmission choices favoured durability over speed: a stout three‑speed gearbox with a low‑range transfer case, heavy‑duty final drives, and blocky steel tyres or optional rubber pads allowed operation on ploughed fields, muddy tracks, and improvised airstrips.
Functionally the Standard N served as a universal platform: towing artillery limbers and light trailers, hauling fuel and stores, powering stationary pumps and winches through a power take‑off, and supporting bridging or engineering parties. The cab was minimal—an open‑sided shelter or simple canvas hood on many examples—because priority was given to visibility, rapid egress, and uncomplicated controls that could be mastered by drivers with limited training. Modular attachment points and standardised hitching equipment meant workshops could fit winches, cable reels, or agricultural implements without bespoke fabrication, increasing the tractor’s value across supply, recovery, and field engineering units.
Operationally the Mod. 1940 gained a reputation for reliability in austere conditions; crews praised its forgiving engine and the low‑tech maintainability that kept vehicles running where more complex machines failed. Its influence persisted after the conflict as surplus tractors entered civilian service and as designers incorporated lessons about modularity and maintainability into postwar utility‑vehicle programmes. Today the Standard N "Green" stands as an example of pragmatic wartime engineering: not glamorous, but essential to the logistics backbone that kept front‑line units mobile and supplied.
This kit from MiniArt:
This model represents the tractor that was widely used across British military and civilian sectors during World War II. This “Green” version represents the wartime modification adapted for Royal Air Force and general service use, easily recognised by its durable build and characteristic olive finish.
