Confession time, I’m the guy who buys magazines for the pictures rather than the articles. Because pictures really do tell the story, and this latest publication from AK Interactive is a perfect example.
This is their new book on the legendary AH-64 Apache, by John Lekkas, and I've got to tell you, it's absolutely stunning.
Now, I've had a fascination with the Apache for as long as I can remember. In fact, I'm going right back to the days of the old Commodore 64 days, playing Gunship, where you got to fly an Apache around, blowing things up. Or at least trying to… And I reckon that's where my fascination with this extraordinary machine began.
Fast-forward a few decades, and I've got the 35th scale Takom Apache sitting in my stash. It's been there for ages, and one of the reasons I haven't tackled it is that I've never really found the sort of detailed reference material I'd been looking for. So the build stalled. However, that hurdle has just been cleared!
This is a 152-page softcover publication, and while it's relatively light on text, it's absolutely packed with extraordinary photography. There are some fantastic operational photographs showing the Apache in action, along with examples of the different camouflage schemes and markings worn by these machines around the world.
But for me, it's those detailed walkaround photographs that really set this book apart. We're talking about parts of the Apache that you rarely get to see, certainly not in this sort of detail. Mechanical components, fittings, surface textures and all those fascinating little areas that, as modellers, we absolutely love to explore.
The photography is simply flawless. The images are sharp, beautifully reproduced and large enough that you can really get in there and study the details….and that's what makes this book so useful.
Whether you're looking to add a little extra detail, improve the accuracy of your build, or simply understand how this incredible machine is put together, there's an enormous amount of inspiration here.
But I also think this publication has a much broader appeal. You don't have to be a scale modeller to appreciate it. If you're an aviation enthusiast or simply someone fascinated by the engineering and complexity of modern military aircraft, there's plenty here to enjoy. And quite frankly, this is exactly the sort of reference book I've always wanted, on just about any subject.
Something you can leave open besides the workbench, keep coming back to, and discover something new every time. John Lekkas and AK Interactive has produced an absolutely beautiful publication, and I really hope we see more books presented in this style. And as for that, Takom Apache gathering dust in the stash? Well, I think I've just run out of excuses.
And remember, sometimes it really is all about the pictures! Here is the video of the review for those who don't like to read too much...
