The Subject: Stryker M1296 ICV-Dragoon W/ESA MWO Upgrade
The M1296 Stryker Infantry Carrier Vehicle Dragoon (ICV-D) with Enhanced Situational Awareness (ESA) modification work order (MWO) upgrade represents a significant leap in the modernisation of U.S. Army Stryker Brigade Combat Teams.
The ESA package integrates advanced communications systems, perimeter warning devices, and improved optics to give crews a sharper edge in contested environments. At the heart of the upgrade is the Mk44 Bushmaster II 30mm autocannon mounted in the Kongsberg MCT-30 remote turret, which dramatically increases lethality compared to the original Stryker ICV’s armament. The MWO also introduces refinements in stowage and armour protection, including a redesigned rear basket and reinforced turret shielding, ensuring the vehicle can sustain operations while safeguarding its crew.
Operationally, the ESA MWO transforms the Stryker Dragoon into a more connected and survivable platform. Enhanced sensor integration improves target acquisition and situational awareness, allowing crews to detect threats faster and coordinate more effectively with dismounted infantry. The upgrade reflects lessons learned from recent deployments, where the need for rapid information sharing and improved defensive systems became critical.
By combining firepower, protection, and digital connectivity, the M1296 ICV-D with ESA MWO ensures that Stryker units remain adaptable in multi-domain operations, bridging the gap between traditional armoured vehicles and modern networked warfare.
The Kit from Zimi Model:
This model is based on the old Panda kit, but this time with improved tooling. There are newly developed parts, which are highlighted and marked in yellow in the CAD photo demonstration below.
Here is the test kit built up, with the photo-etch easy to identify. The kit's updated details are
Mostly around the turret, rear and sensor/EW gear.
Lastly, the built-up and painted kit – it looks great, doesn't it?
